The United States Government offers employment-based visas that lead you to obtain legal permanent residency (a green card). The extraordinary ability is a subcategory of the first preference visa called EB-1 (A).

What is extraordinary ability?

  • Extraordinary ability is defined as the expertise of a small percentage of people that have great knowledge in the fields of science, art, education, business, or athletics. This small percentage of people have exceeded their peers, and this is why they are considered to have extraordinary abilities.
  • People who have an extraordinary ability are usually nationally or internationally recognized and awarded.

What are the requirements?

  • Receipt of national or international awards such as the Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize or an Olympic Medal. However, other awards may qualify.
  • People must continue to work in their field of expertise. For example, a science researcher should be coming to the United States to continue to do scientific research.
  • Published materials in professional or major publications. For example, scientific newspapers, research magazines, books, and/or articles.
  • Evidence of commercial success. For example, proof that you have successfully started and/or expanded business(es).

Do I need a job offer to apply for this visa?

  • No, you do not need a job offer. However, letters from potential employers will be helpful in proving that you will continue to work in the same field.
